VI - The Lovers

Two people, a man and a woman, stand partly facing each other on opposite sides of the picture. They are nude, showing they have nothing to hide. Above and between  them, rising  from a cloud, is the

Archangel, Raphael, the angel of the air, holding his hands up in benediction over The Lovers. They appear to represent Adam and Eve. Behind “Eve” is the “Tree of knowledge” with a serpent wrapped around it, its head reaching out towards her. The figures are said to represent the three levels of mind, “conscious, subconscious and superconscious.” The man, the conscious mind, looks toward the woman, representing the subconscious.  She, in turn, looks to Raphael, symbolizing the Superconscious, as if for guidance.

Esoterically, the key word for this card is “discrimination.”  It is the symbol of our being able to “discriminate” what is right and what

is wrong.  In other words, it represents our conscience.  We make decisions every minute of every day.  Some of these decisions are right for us and lead to a good result, and some are not so good and don’t turn out so well for us.  This is where it is so important for us to discriminate the virtues of both sides of the question before we make a choice which may or may not be good for us.

Here’s a little secret; that which is widely considered to be wrong became that way for a reason.  Decisions which lead us away from the love of our fellow man, selfish, thoughtless choices, tend to also separate our consciousness from the Divine.  When we choose to make decisions which are unselfish and loving in nature, our consciousness becomes closer to that wonderful force which permeates the Universe – which, in fact, IS The Universe, and we can feel it.  That is where our conscience comes in.

On some level, we all know what is right for us and what is not.  We only have to listen.  When you’re about to make a decision which might have some question, think about it.  Pay attention to how you “feel” about what you are about to do.  If you are left with a question in your mind, it probably isn’t right for you.  The right course of action just feels right, somehow.  The wrong one tends to leave a nagging doubt in your mind, a bad feeling.  So, that’s a good time to rethink your options.  There’s always a right choice for you, and when you find it you will know it is the right choice for sure – there’ll be no doubt in your mind.

When I meditate on The Lovers I try to remember to be grateful that the Infinite gave me a conscience. I’m grateful that I have something which can lead me in the right direction. As long as I am able to make the time to really listen to my conscience I will make the choices which lead me in the direction which will bring me back to the Source, the Infinite, The Divine, All That Is.

And, that’s exactly where I want to be!
