About Tarot Cards
Although there is an ever increasing number of oracle cards out there, true Tarot consists of a pack of 78 cards. Some say the Tarot has three sections: Minor Arcana (secrets), Major Arcana and The Fool. Others, and I am one of them, include The Fool at the beginning of the
Major Arcana.
There are 22 cards in the Majors, from #0, The Fool, to #21, The World. Most important, at least from my point of view, is the spiritual aspect of the Major Arcana. I won’t go into that here, but to find information on that, see my pages on Spiritual Tarot. And, of course, the majors are used in divination. We’ll also look at that later on.
The Minor Arcana has 56 cards and is very much like a deck of modern playing cards.
The “extra” four cards is found in the “court”, or “face” cards. While modern playing
cards have three “face” cards; Jack, Queen, and King, Tarot has a “court” of four
cards; Page, Knight, Queen, and King. In both cases there are four suits and ten
“pip” cards from Ace to Ten. The suits are different but similar. Generally speaking,
the Tarot suits are -
There is evidence that Tarot was first developed, without the Major Arcana, as a
game of cards for the well-
There isn’t a great deal of historical documentation available, but it appears that the Major Arcana was added later as “trump” cards.
Tarot mythology has it that the Major Arcana (Higher Secrets) were far more ancient
in their origins. It is said by some that these 22 figures were originally tapestries
that hung on the walls of various ancient mystery schools and were used in the seekers’
initiation ceremonies. According to this legend, when the Church became all-

having their initiation tapestries painted on cards for the rich to play with. It worked. Who would ever expect hidden teachings to be that visible? Apparently nobody. And they were able to continue studying.
Is this story true? Who knows? I like to think so...
