Meditation refers to a practice where your body and mind are intentionally relaxed and focused. Those who regularly meditate speak of amplified consciousness, focus, and alertness, and a more positive attitude toward life. Meditation most often brings to mind, monks, mediums and other spiritual practitioners. But, it’s not necessary to be a monk or mystic to utilize its advantages. You needn’t even be anywhere special to perform it. You can even meditate in your living room!

While there may be a lot of diverse methods of meditation, the fundamentals remain the same. The most essential application is removing disruptive, negative, and wandering thoughts and fantasies, and centering your mind with an intense sensation of focus. This clears the mind of debris and prepares it for a more profound level of activity.

The negative thoughts you have – those of noisy neighbors, the unwanted spam in your email – all contribute to the ‘pollution’ of your mind, and blocking them out allows for the ‘cleansing’ of your mind so it is able to focus on more profound, more significant thoughts.

Some meditators even close out all sensory input – nothing to touch, no sights, and no sounds – and try to isolate themselves from the hubbub around them. Now you can focus on a, profound thought if this is what you want. The quiet may seem deafening at first, because we are so accustomed to incessantly being assailed with sounds and sights, but, as you maintain this practice, you will become less and less aware of all the activity around you.

If the meditating positions on TV seem intimidating to you – the ones with incredibly arched backs, and painful-looking contortions – there’s no need to worry. What is needed here is a comfortable posture conducive to concentration and relaxation. this might be while sitting upright in a chair, lying down, standing up, or even walking.

As long as the position lets you relax and focus, it’s a good place to start. While standing, sitting, or lying down, keep your back straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only imperative is no slouching or falling asleep.

Loose and comfortable clothing facilitate the process As clothing that is too tight-fitting has a tendency to confine you and make you feel tense.

The setting where you perform your meditation should be a soothing environment. It could be your living room, your bedroom, or any place where you feel comfortable . You may want an exercise mat if you plan to attempt the more challenging positions (if you are more focused by doing so, and if the contortionist within you is begging for release). You might want to have the place arranged so that it is relaxing to you.

Silence assists many people to relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area away from ringing telephones or the clamor of the TV. Pleasing scents also help in this area, so stocking up on aromatic candles isn’t such a bad idea either.

The monks you see on TV making those monotonous sounds are simply intoning their mantras. A mantra is just a group of words or sounds, a simple sound that, for these meditators, holds a mystical importance.

It’s not necessary for you to chant a mantra; however, it might be a good idea for you to note that focusing in on repetitive things repeating a short word like “one” or maybe your breathing can assist you in entering a higher level of consciousness.

The secret here is in your focus. Or, you could try focusing on some single object or thought, or even, keeping your eyes open and, focusing in on a single sight, perhaps a flower or the flame of a candle.

One simple practice would be to – while in this deeply relaxed state – feel each part of your body and centering your awareness on each part one at a time. While doing this you should become aware of any tension on any part of your body. Mentally, release any tense area you find. This is very effective.

All in all, meditation is a completely natural process, it’s risk-free and the benefits you experience are well worth the effort (or perhaps non-effort would be more accurate – We ARE relaxing after all).

Many scientific studies are showing that meditation definitely has valuable physiological effects to the bodies of its practitioners. Also, there has been an increasing agreement in the medical world to further study the effects of meditation. So in the near future, who knows, that deeply spiritual exercise we call meditation could become a new science in itself!
